DuroMax XP5500EH review

A dual fuel generator is an energy generating device that can supply electricity for you. Just like a regular gas generator, it is commonly used for home backup.

Why is it better than a gas generator? Firstly, it can be powered by both propane and gas to provide more power for a longer time. Second, propane is cheaper than gas, so this generator is cheaper to use.

One of the best dual fuel generators that we recommend is the DuroMax XP5500EH. Below, we provide you with a detailed review alongside with its pros and cons.

Hopefully, it can help you decide if this is the suitable generator for you. Let’s get started!

Pros

1. Powerful 225cc Engine

The most important thing for a generator, especially when used as a home backup, is power. The DuroMax XP5500EH has 5500 starting watts and 4500 watts capable of supplying energy for a long time.

We would also like to highlight its powerful engine that runs at 225cc, which can supply power to multiple of your heaviest home appliances at the same time.

2. Dual Fuel Technology

As we mentioned before, the DuroMax XP5500EH is a dual fuel generator. It runs on both propane and gas. It actually enhances the performance of the generator and provides you flexibility in case of emergencies.

Another important benefit is that propane can be cheaper than gas meaning that this generator is relatively cheaper to run than a regular generator.

3. MX2 Technology

Using a generator for home backup, RVs, and other outdoor purposes each has different power requirements. This is where the MX2 technology comes in handy.

MX2 technology allows you to get maximum power from each of the 120-volts receptacles. You can choose to turn both receptacles on for 240-volts or adjust the output according to your needs.

4. Portable Power Whenever You Need

Easy to transport

Generators tend to be bulky, which is fine for home use, but we know that some of you need portable generators for other purposes.

The DuroMax XP5500EH has a compact design equipped with wheels to ensure maximum portability, making it perfect for RVs or outdoor use.

5. Security Features

We have to say that most generators are usually safe to use, but it is not something to be overlooked. The DuroMax XP5500EH has a complete safety feature that includes a surge protector and a voltmeter.

It also has a low oil shutoff and low oil indicator, which not only ensure your safety but also help you maintain your generator.

6. Low Noise Levels

Whether at home or an RV, the most annoying thing about a generator is its noise.

Fortunately, this generator is designed with a high-quality muffler behind the structure of the generator alongside with a rubber mount to reduce vibrations.

As a result, the sound only measures up to 70 decibels which is excellent when compared to regular generators.

7. Fully Featured Power Panel

The DuroMax XP5500EH has a fully featured power panel compatible for all your devices. It includes two 120V household GFCI outlets and a 120/240V 30A twist lock outlet.

The panel also features a voltmeter and 12V DC charging posts for charging external batteries.

Cons

In terms of power output, the DuroMax XP5500EH is second to none, but some users experienced a fluctuation in power upon the first few minutes of usage.

However, this is not a problem because it will run normally and provide you steady power after several minutes.

The oil drain plug is located directly over the horizontal frame support just less than an inch away from the rubber vibration damper. Some people find it challenging to refill the oil without spilling over some of the oil.

While the security features will eliminate any potential danger, oil spillage is always hard to deal with. For this, we would recommend using a funnel to refill the oil tidily.

This generator is not as big as commercial models and can be moved around easily. It does come with a pair of wheels to help you move it, but some people find them not sturdy enough.

However, this shouldn’t be a major problem as it still functions well.

Price

A dual fuel generator is generally more expensive than a conventional generator, but keep in mind that it can be cheaper to operate when relying on propane.

As for the DuroMax XP5500EH, it is not the cheapest generator available on the market, but it is definitely not overpriced especially for its quality.

It currently retails at $599, though note that this price might change in the future.

Conclusion

Overall, the DuroMax XP5500EH is a powerful dual fuel generator that you can rely on. It is suitable as home backup, RVs, and outdoor use.

If you think that it’s too big and expensive for your use, just get the same DuroMax generator with less wattage, which will cost less than the XP5500EH.
